The Agora: a friendly, green building!

A festive moment in Kraainem on Sunday, September 12!
Mayor Bertrand Waucquez officially inaugurates the new Agora cultural center (located rue du Patronage, near the sports hall), the construction of which was initiated under the previous legislature and overseen by heritage alderman Johan Forton.

The hoped-for results are definitely there! In addition to the large 180-seat auditorium, foyer and bar, the new building includes several classrooms that can be used by both French- and Dutch-speaking Kraainem associations(1). Several events have already taken place, including the Amitiés Musicales film-concert and the bilingual lecture by Martine Kuhn and Colette Storms on the Cité-jardin Bouvier-Washer (Discover Kraainem). Others are planned: from the end of November, the Théâtre Royal des Parenthèses troupe will perform the famous play “Le Mariage de Mademoiselle Beulemans”. Businesses and private individuals can also rent the various modules, thus expanding the range of rooms available in the commune!

What’s more, the Agora is a green building! The cooling system (essential in the auditorium, for example) makes ingenious use of spring water, which spontaneously gushes into the grounds of a business on avenue Dezangré. The installation of pumps and ducts has eliminated the need for an energy-intensive, costly and noisy air conditioning system. The technique used is a win-win situation for the municipality: economical, healthy and sustainable!

A new multi-purpose hall in Kraainem

Construction of the new multi-purpose hall next to the sports hall on rue du Patronage began in the spring. By 2020, the town’s cultural associations (theater, music, art workshops, etc.) will be able to benefit from a brand new infrastructure for their activities, including a 180-seat auditorium. For its part, the Foyer du Lijsterbes reopens its doors in September, good news for the launch of the 2019-2020 cultural season (see program at www.delijsterbes.be) and for entertainment in the neighborhood, which has already benefited from the reopening of the New Inn in June.
