The Mayor Bertrand Waucquez is sworn in by the governor and immediately appointed: Kraainem obtains an additional alderman

On Wednesday, the mayor of Kraainem, Bertrand Waucquez (LB Kraainem-Unie), was sworn in by the governor of the province of Flemish Brabant, Jan Spooren. The burgomaster of this easy-going municipality has also been officially appointed, enabling the college of aldermen to welcome a fifth member as of next week.
In the past, problems with the French-language letters of convocation for local elections have prevented the appointment of certain mayors in Kraainem. The matter was even referred to the Council of State over ten years ago. However, Bertrand Waucquez’s appointment was already in doubt six years ago, and this time too, following the municipal elections in October, he begins his second term as burgomaster of the municipality with facilities. Provincial governor Jan Spooren has confirmed his appointment, and on Wednesday, the mayor of Kraainem was sworn in at the provincial headquarters.

A pragmatic approach

“Hats off to the way the governor has handled this,” says Waucquez. “He takes the time to receive the 63 burgomasters of Flemish Brabant individually and gives them all the attention they need. I also admire his pragmatic approach to the appointment of burgomasters in communes with facilities.”
With this appointment, the Kraainem aldermen’s board will have a fifth member. This Tuesday, Nathalie Woitrina member of the same party as Waucquez, will be sworn in at the town council meeting. With this appointment, the college will now have five female aldermen. Bertrand Waucquez will remain the only male alderman.
